A team of specialist mental health workers is being set up to help families from the point when they first see a professional about a mental health issue.
Ruth Beecher, service manager for business support in children's services at Islington council, said: "We're trying to make sure they get good services from professionals joining up together in a team right at that first point of contact."
The team will see mental health workers, adult services and children's services working together. The council has received £780,000 from the Department for Children, Schools and Families towards the project.
It also received £400,000 to extend the project to help young carers, which will go towards reducing the caring responsibilities on children of parents with mental health needs. The team hopes to reduce unemployment in these households and increase the number of young people affected by the mental health needs of family members who go into further education.
