Strategic Legal Fund for Vulnerable Young Migrants

Offers grants that support work in any area of law that affects vulnerable young migrants

What is it? The Strategic Legal Fund for Vulnerable Young Migrants aims to tackle injustices and inconsistencies in legal practice that disadvantage or discriminate against vulnerable young migrants as a result of their migration status. The fund was initially set up by The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund in October 2011 as a 12-month pilot project, but in November 2012 became a Trust for London initiative, delivered in partnership with the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and MigrationWork CIC.

How much is on offer? A total of £400,000 in new funding was announced last month, following a positive evaluation into work carried out using grants during its pilot year.

What will it fund? The fund will consider applications to support work in any area of law that affects vulnerable young migrants including asylum, immigration, human rights, community care, housing, education or mental health. It is suitable for cases involving children and young people up to the age of 25. The fund only supports strategic legal work, which it defines as work where the impact is likely to go beyond an individual case, and could result in changes to law, policy and practice that will benefit a wider group of people.

When is the deadline? There are application deadlines every six to eight weeks. In general, a decision will be made on funding within two weeks of the application deadline.
