It works particularly well if I ask everyone to stand up and then take their seats again, as I count through the ages of their children leaving home - 16, 17, 18, and so on.
Even by the time I reach the mid-20s, many of the parents in the audience are still standing.
That is because the average age of adult children still living at home in the UK is 27. According to the Office for National Statistics, the age at which children leave the family home in the UK has risen steadily over the years - and this trend is likely to continue as a result of economic austerity.
