Sutton council has listened to the whole community to develop a child-centred play strategy that offers something for all ages. Mark Johnson reports.

Last year, when a group of teenagers from the south London borough ofSutton sat down to a fish and chip supper with the Sutton Seniors Forum,they didn't expect to have much in common with the old people around thetable, or find much sympathy for the views and needs of localteenagers.

But as the salt and vinegar was passed round the tables, it became clearthat the two generations had plenty to say to each other - although notall of it favourable. One elderly woman was overheard saying to ateenager with several facial piercings: "If I'd dressed like that when Iwas your age, my mother would have called me a tart." The girl laughedand explained that one of the reasons she and her friends dressed insuch an apparently hostile manner was to avoid being picked on.
