The project saw special workers or "buddies" allocated to individualchildren with additional needs. The buddies gave them extra supportwhile allowing them the freedom to play.
The project was developed by Flintshire County Council's play unit, withthe integrated disability service and the local children and youngpeople partnership. Play development officer Janet Roberts said a keyfactor had been gaining parents' trust and confidence. "A great deal ofpersuasion was needed with some parents but the end result has beenfantastic," she said.
Roberts hoped the scheme would eventually be rolled out to all 68 ofFlintshire's summer play schemes. "To develop and enhance future schemeswe plan to introduce buddies to the families well in advance of theschemes so that they can get to know the child," she added.
