
As part of attempts to improve the quality of social worker training, it was announced last month that newly qualified practitioners will have to pass a test of their knowledge in order to become approved.
The test will be based on a range of skills that social workers will be expected to hold that have been set out in a Knowledge and Skills Statement, a draft version of which has been created by chief social worker for children Isabelle Trowler (see box).
The statement is out for consultation until 9 October, with the proposed test due to be piloted early next year. But will it have the desired impact of improving the quality of social workers?
