An Economic and Social Research Council-funded study found many parentshad established more local networks through their children than by anyother means. Ante-natal classes, nursery and primary school were vitalways in which parents met one another.
The study, entitled Children's "Place" in the Development ofNeighbourhood Social Capital, found that in neighbourhoods where therewere more social networks there was greater confidence in the safety ofthat area.
Co-author Dr Susie Weller of London South Bank University said thatalthough children were often portrayed as either vulnerable and in needof protection, or intimidating and anti-social, they were in fact activein forging neighbourly relationships for their parents.
