Social inclusion: A school for all of us

A focus on outcomes for children is at the centre of Manchester Council's efforts to promote inclusion in its schools. David Singleton takes a closer look.

Seymour Road Primary School in Manchester is doing more than most to tackle social exclusion. The school has calculated that around 30 per cent of its pupils could be at risk and has sent detailed questionnaires to every one of them. It has also introduced friendship grids to find out how well pupils are interacting with their peers, and it has started a "message in a bottle" initiative to establish what makes pupils feel safe and what makes them feel proud.

However, this is just the beginning. "We don't write children off at this school," says head teacher Beverly Artis. "If there are problems with a child the easy option is to move them elsewhere, but we try to look at the symptoms and deal with the underlying problems."
