Social care: Work with young offenders criticised

The new chief executive of Barnardo's, former prison service head Martin Narey, has criticised some social workers for not supporting children in prison.

"Some see the time in custody as dead time and don't get as involved insomeone's time in custody as they might," he said. "I've been prettydepressed on more than one occasion to see prison institutions holdingchildren try to involve home social workers and being rebuffed."

Narey stressed that work to prepare a child for release should beginfrom the first day they enter custody. He also said charities could domore to "help young people in trouble". He said the UK's five largestchildren's charities should unite to put pressure on the Government."Government are probably relieved that that virtually never happens," headded.
