Social Care News: Workforce - GSCC backs status for new workers

The chief executive of the General Social Care Council (GSCC) would like to see a status for new social workers similar to that of newly qualified teachers.

Speaking at a meeting of the Conservatives' Social Work Commission,Lynne Berry said the first 58 degree-trained social workers had justgraduated.

She told the commission that the GSCC is now working on a framework tohelp develop training and ensure newly qualified social workers achievepost-qualifying awards.

She said that the codes of practice for social work were importantbecause they will not just apply to the social workers themselves. "Thebest thing about the codes of practice is that they apply to employerstoo," she said.

Berry added that the fact that social workers now have to register withthe GSCC means that the status of social workers is improving.
