Social Care News: Poverty - Fewer kids in low income families

The number of children in families claiming an income-related benefit fell by 67,000 last year.

At November last year, nearly 2.3 million children - 17.8 per cent of all children - were in such families, down from almost 2.4 million, or 18.4 per cent, the year before.

The Department for Work and Pensions figures show that the number of children in families receiving income-related benefits has fallen every year since 1996.

Last year, 58 per cent of key benefit children were in families that were claiming income support only, and 65 per cent were living in families where the claimant was single.
