Social Care News: Looked-after children - School forced intoadmissions change

A local authority has used the schools adjudicator to force a religious school to change its admissions criteria for children in care even though there were no problems.

Chris Pratt, executive director for Trafford Metropolitan Council'schildren and young people's service, said: "There haven't been anyreported problems and I'm sure Loreto Grammar School would be welcomingof looked-after children. But when they sent us their admissionarrangements they were vague and didn't comply with regulations."

The Office of the Schools Adjudicator agreed with the council thatlooked-after children should have top priority in admissions criteria. The council successfully argued that the school's existing code wouldmake it difficult to place a looked-after child there, whether RomanCatholic or not.

The adjudicator ordered the school to change its criteria in line withthe Code of Practice on Schools Admissions.
