Social Care News: Industrial action - Turnout is low for Liverpool strike

Liverpool Council said less than 100 of the 300 staff in children's services and its emergency duty team went on strike over their workload last Tuesday.

In a ballot six months ago, 160 workers voted to strike, but the spokesman said many issues had been resolved after meetings with public sector union Unison.

Union spokesman Steve Blakesley said staff were angry at the council's attitude and concerned over plans for redeployment. He said staff were overloaded, but the council said the vacancy rate was two per cent, against a national average of nine per cent.
