Social Care News: Housing - Hidden housing crisis must be solved

1 min read
Shelter has called on housing to be put "back up the political agenda" after finding that more than one million children are living in overcrowded or unfit accommodation that is affecting their health and education and blighting their future.

Launching the biggest campaign in its 40-year history, the homelessness charity said the Government should fund a massive programme of house building and take action to improve standards in privately rented accommodation.

Adam Sampson, director of Shelter, said: "There is a hidden housing crisis in Britain and over a million children are suffering the devastating consequences on their health, their education and their chances in life.

"It is time for housing to be put back up the political agenda along with education and health where it belongs."

Shelter's new report, Toying with their future, found that children are more likely to develop bronchitis, TB and asthma because of bad housing, and children who are homeless lose a quarter of their schooling.
