Social Care News: Direct Payments - Low uptake not the fault of authorities

The low uptake of direct payments for social services by disabled young people and their parents in Scotland does not necessarily reflect poor promotion by local authorities, a social work leader has said.

Only 32 disabled under-18s and their parents are receiving direct payments for social services, new figures from the Scottish Executive have revealed.

But George Hunter, spokesman on community care for the Association of Directors of Social Work, said the low uptake "might reflect that people are actually pleased about the flexibility of services".

"I don't think there's a straight-forward correlation between a lack of enthusiasm by local authorities to promote them and low uptake," he added.

"The more services are customised, the less pressure people feel to take payments."

The payments are meant to give people more independence in choosing services.
