Social Care News: Asylum seekers - Under-18s benefit from jointprotocol

Asylum seekers who cannot prove they are under 18 are set to benefit from a joint protocol that social services directors have agreed with the Home Office.

"For young people where an age dispute arises it is a significantissue," said Steve Liddicott, divisional director of children's servicesat the London Borough of Croydon. "There are differences in terms of howan asylum application is dealt with and the support you get according towhether you are classified as a child or adult." The agreement betweenthe Association of Directors of Social Services and the Immigration andNationality Directorate will add "clarity" to who does what and at whichstage, said Liddicott.
