Sir Paul Ennals: Tough times ahead, but also reasons to be cheerful

On 20 October, the government will announce plans for public expenditure over the next four years in its spending review.

What might happen to funding for social work with children and families? We know children's services are facing tough times. Although cuts in Department for Education budgets are said to be between 10 and 20 per cent, schools budgets will be largely protected.

Most people are expecting cuts of up to 40 per cent in wider children's services - with some local authorities planning for worse - so it's hardly optimistic. But there are reasons to be cheerful.

Firstly, I think the majority of the Social Work Reform Board's recommendations will still be supported. We will continue to see improvements in social work training, support for newly qualified workers, managers and supervisors, and more continuous professional development.
