Should the social work college link up with Unison?

2 mins read Social Care
The College of Social Work's plans for an exclusive tie-up with Unison have sparked controversy

NO

Fran Fuller, British Association of Social Workers chair

Social workers should be free to choose which union they want to belong to. No other profession has had such a body imposed upon them from outside.
Unison should be part of the college, just like the other seven unions that have social worker members, not dominating it. Unison is a public sector union that represents a wide range of professions, of which the social worker voice is not the strongest.
Ministers and the Social Care Institute for Excellence should not have brokered this deal. It is inappropriate for a union that wasn’t keen on establishing a college having such a pivotal role in its development. Frontline practitioners need a change they can believe in, and we will continue to push for their voices to be heard.
