Sexual Assault: Referral centre for younger victims

Young victims of sexual assault will have their needs met under one roof following the creation of a referral centre for under-18s later this year.

The centre, which will cover the greater Manchester area, is to be set up by St Mary's Centre, a sexual assault referral centre for adults, in collaboration with Manchester Children's University Hospitals NHS Trust, Greater Manchester Police and Greater Manchester Police Authority.

Services will be run in parallel with adult services. Children will receive counselling, screening for sexually transmitted infections, and support from a social worker, forensic physicians, paediatricians and a play worker.

Dr Cath White, clinical director at St Mary's Centre, and a forensic physician and GP, said children were currently seen in the adult unit which was not "geared up" to treat them.
