SEN free schools bid to end ‘inclusion bias'

Plans are submitted for 27 free schools for children with special educational needs, adding to three already open and five launching next year

The number of dedicated schools for children with special educational needs (SEN) and disabilities has been on the wane for many years. But the coalition government has made it a priority to tackle the so-called “bias towards inclusion” and reverse the decline.

The introduction of free schools has provided the opportunity to make that ambition a reality – with figures now suggesting that dozens of SEN free schools could be set up over the next three to four years.

There are currently three SEN free schools: City of Peterborough Academy Special School, the Lighthouse School in Leeds and the Rosewood School in Southampton. A further five are due to open in 2013.
