Stringent measures to prevent data leaks must be embedded in ContactPoint, a children's rights group has warned, after a memory stick with the details of 5,000 children was lost in Leeds.

Katy Swaine, legal director at the Children's Rights Alliance for England, said controls must be in place when ContactPoint goes live next year.

"Plans for ContactPoint must recognise that any collection and sharing of data will bring with it a risk of data loss like this," she said.

A spokeswoman for Leeds City Council said a full investigation into the loss had been launched.
