
As part of the multi-billion pound NHS IT project Connecting for Health, new computer systems have been introduced in adult prisons and young offender institutions to enhance the way offender health is handled.
The SystmOne software allows for the immediate and secure transfer of records between prisons as offenders are moved, with the aim of improving continuity of care.
Reduction of risk
The system is said to reduce the risk of harm to young people, who can be in danger of self-harm in custody, and is also credited with improving the likelihood of successful resettlement at the end of a sentence.
However, it has emerged that the system is not being introduced in secure training centres (STCs) or secure children's homes (SCHs), where some of the most vulnerable children are held.
