Schools should do more to support youth work

The role of youth work in formal education has gained more attention in recent times.

Indeed, Wales's first national youth work conference for two years in mid-March focused very much on youth work and schools. The hardly veiled priority was the re-engagement of young people who are "Neet" (not in education, employment or training) - youth work needs to be supporting the formal education agenda. That is the central tenet of the Welsh national youth work strategy, launched two years ago. It has in some respects now been overtaken by the Donaldson Report on education in Wales, which contains some excellent recommendations for what might be called "life-wide learning", and all of his recommendations have been accepted by the Welsh government.
