Schools must embrace social workers

Teachers need to overcome a resistance and resentment towards having social workers in schools to help vulnerable children, a study has found.

The Value of Social Care Professionals Working in Extended Schools, published by the National Foundation for Educational Research, found strong benefits to having social workers based in schools. One head of community education told researchers: "Changing the view of schools, which tend to be a bit insular, and trying to develop a much more open approach from school management about the value of input from other professionals is challenging."
