The figures, which are for 2005/06, represent a slight fall compared tothe previous year when 59,330 appeals were heard by a panel. In totalmore than six per cent of all new admissions to secondary schools wentto appeal last year.
Shadow education minister Nick Gibb said the figures showed more goodstate schools were needed: "The fact that so many parents are stillfailing to get their child into the school of their choice demonstratesonce again the need for us to create more good schools in the statesector, and to raise standards in all schools."
