School meals: Manchester dining hall gets makeover

A Manchester school has ditched plastic trays and trestle tables and redesigned its dining hall into a restaurant to make lunchtimes more enjoyable.

The changes are part of an effort by Beaver Road Primary School to makeschool lunches more sociable and healthier.

Head teacher David How said: "I visited schools in Italy and saw howthey make lunch a social occasion. They took their time and the childrenreally enjoyed the meals. Whereas here children tended to come in, graba meal, eat it quickly and go back to the playground."

How decided to introduce the changes after children on the schoolcouncil said lunch was the least enjoyable bit of the school day.

The school now has smaller round tables complete with flowers andtablecloths.

The changes have coincided with the school introducing healthiermeals.
