School discipline: Exclusions for racist abuse on the rise

The number of pupils suspended from school because of racist abuse has increased by a third.

Figures obtained by Liberal Democrat education spokeswoman Sarah Teathershow that there were 3,390 temporary exclusions for racist abuse in2004/05, the latest year available, compared to 2,630 in 2003/04.

Teather said the suspensions highlighted the poor state of racerelations.

"That so many young people are resorting to racist abuse in theplayground is deeply disturbing," she said. "Initiatives on citizenshipclasses are clearly failing miserably."

The figures also revealed that a quarter of all suspensions were due tophysical assaults against pupils or adults.
