Safeguarding: DfES rejects asylum seeker proposals

1 min read
The Government has rejected a call by eight chief inspectors that more must be done to safeguard asylum-seeking children.

In July, eight government inspectorates published the secondSafeguarding Children report, a comprehensive review of how children aretreated by public services in England (Children Now, 20-26 July 2005).The report highlighted areas of "significant concern" and made 24recommendations.

But the Government's response, published last week, said therecommendation on how children in immigration removal centres weretreated was "unnecessary".

Inspectors had called for more robust guidance to protect asylum-seekingchildren.

A statement signed by all eight inspectorates said they were concernedthat this recommendation was not accepted.

Alison Webster, principal policy officer at Barnardo's, agreed. "We aredisappointed this recommendation was not accepted. Refugee children arechildren first and foremost and should have the same protection and careas other children and young people in this country."
