Runaways: Joint protocol to be used across capital

London councils are set to receive new guidelines on what to do when a child runs away from home.

Last June the London Refuge for Runaway Children launched a jointprotocol that was piloted by 10 east London authorities. It is used byagencies and services such as police, social services and schools to tryand break the cycle of repeated running away (Children Now, 29 June-5July 2005).

It proved so successful that the London Child Protection Committee is toadopt the protocol as its safeguarding young runaways procedure, whichLondon authorities will be expected to use.

John Gandy, co-ordinator of the London Refuge's Young Runaways Project'said: "The new procedure will target children who may otherwise needchild protection in the future. Those children who repeatedly run awayare more vulnerable and by doing appropriate follow-up care we hope toreduce the numbers."
