Although some big names in the field of autism all praise this work of O'Toole's on the first page, I was not smitten, and, in fact, bemused by their enthusiasm. The book is about ergonomics, about designing, arranging and making things in the home for Asperger's children so that they can better interact with the products, systems and processes of that space.

It is also about training, about equipping the child with coping skills that he or she can use in adulthood through the vehicle known as "home", or "launch pad", as O'Toole refers to it. She believes an ordered home is essential for, and instrumental to, the Asperger's child's success both now and in the future, in the outside world. Her mantra is: 'To best serve your Aspergerkid, yes, you must strive to create a home that is thoughtful, calm, and lovely' (p.160).
