Respite services funding must be tracked, urge campaigners

A tracking system should be introduced to make sure government money for short breaks for disabled children is actually spent on these services.

In this month's Comprehensive Spending Review, the Chancellor gave £280m to the NHS to pay for short breaks (CYP Now, 17-23 October). But the Department of Health (DH) told CYP Now primary care trusts will be left to decide whether to spend the money on these services.

Carol Herrity, campaigns manager at the charity Mencap, said there should be a way to check the money is spent on the services it is meant for. "Once the money gets into the health service, who knows where it is going to go," she said. "There needs to be tracking to ensure there is some sort of return coming out."
