RESOURCES: Talking point - Should drug testing be allowed inschools?

1 min read

Education minister Ivan Lewis says drugs are a modern menace in schools.

He believes young people who are experimenting need to be offered support, education and rehabilitation to come off drugs as soon as possible. Do young people agree?

If the drug tests are random, innocent people will regularly have to go through the indignity of giving urine samples. Is this worth it? Is it a good idea for the tests to be random? Or should they be targeted at people suspected of using or dealing?

Who should give permission? The Government is to recommend that there should be no testing of under-16s without the support and knowledge of parents. Over-16s should be asked for their agreement. Are parents likely to agree?
