Young people are confronted with a range of messages from "look adult" to "look sexy", act like you know how to handle men, but don't dare have sex. If you do, you will be called a "slag". If you catch a sexually transmitted infection (STI), there is something morally wrong with you. And, if you conceive and become a mother, then you have become a "social problem" that needs tackling.
Within this maze of messages, youth work has found some answers to support young women. Organisations such as the YWCA and fpa emphasise the importance and effectiveness of community-based sex and relationships education for young women. Such work addresses every aspect of a young woman's life, not just her body.
