1. Talk to young people about the importance of looking confident, even when they are not feeling it. Anyone who looks lost or is wandering around in obviously unfamiliar territory can attract attention they don't want. Help young people practise ways of looking purposeful.

2. Mobile phones are good. They give a sense of security and are a useful communication tool. But there are still coverage cold spots and batteries do run out. Remember too that the best advice is not to use them in public in unfamiliar areas. They attract opportunistic theft at a time when you are distracted. Talk about this and other basic common-sense strategies, such as keeping some money separate and giving up a purse or wallet if threatened.
