Travellers have been high on the agenda at the Department of Educationand Skills since Ofsted stated in 1999 that: "Gypsy Travellers are thegroup most at risk in the education system." Since then, the DfES hasintroduced a number of measures, such as including Travellers in itsethnic monitoring, placing a duty on schools and education authoritiesto eliminate unlawful racial discrimination, and making Gypsy Travellerchildren a key group targeted by the vulnerable pupil grant.
But there is another sense in which this book is most definitelytimely.
With such global attention focused on social justice as a result of Live8 and G8, now is a particularly appropriate time to ask that socialjustice includes issues close to home.
