Resources: Review - Exploring possible causes for ADHD

1 min read
This is not a book to read cover to cover. Too much scientific data can lead to overload so What Causes ADHD? is more suited to dipping.

Although I found the index a little difficult to negotiate, the layoutof the book itself is clear. Author Joel Nigg includes sections onclinical implications at the end of each chapter, offers his views onmany controversial issues and addresses likely clinical questions.Overall, Nigg addresses scientific models, factors that could causeattention deficit hyperactivity disorder and treatment implications.

Nigg examines possible causes of the disorder, looks at the evidencebehind possible risk factors for its development and how these factorswork together. The section examining evidence on early deprivation isparticularly useful.

ADHD does not have aetiological validity (in other words its cause isunknown). Nigg examines recent research to identify possible causes, concluding that there are multiple pathways to the development thedisorder. He also examines the different subtypes and clinicalpresentations.
