Music & Youth Culture Dan Laughey Published by Edinburgh University Press 248 pages Price 16 ISBN 0 7486 2381 7
Laughey has done all of us a favour by challenging, maybe dispelling, the sacred place of music in youth cultural theory. He does so in a meticulous style but one that also seems, too often, to be irritatingly convoluted - losing some of the power of analysis along the way.
Furthermore, Laughey is wrong to insist that there is a lack of material on youth and popular music. Quite the opposite: there is a huge body of material. He is, however, right to allege that most of this literature is preoccupied with young people's position within musical structures, rather than the place of music in the structures of young people's lives.
