Notwithstanding fundamental terminological differences between countries - do we, in the UK, understand the concept of labour market "activation" and "insertion" policies - the book has two paramount objectives. First, the authors seek to develop a more qualitative, holistic approach to analysing young people's transitions to adult life. The prevailing model is a simple one, assuming that social inclusion depends on labour market integration, which itself depends on education and training qualifications. This necessarily produces a far more complex, and often contradictory, picture, though it is argued that unless policy grapples with such contradictions, its efficacy will continue to be limited.
