Resources: Review - An update of children's circumstances

1 min read
This is the first report of the Millennium Cohort study of 18,000 children born in 2000, being carried out by the Centre for Longitudinal Studies at the Institute of Education in London.

Mothers and, where possible, fathers were interviewed when the baby wasapproximately nine months old. The study broke new ground by samplingdisadvantaged areas and ethnic minority groups. Large-scale studies likethis focus on trends over time and this study is valuable not only inits own right, but because it is also able to draw on earlier studiesbegun in 1946, 1958 and 1970 and make comparisons. In doing so, theauthors hope to inform policy making.

This report focuses on issues such as household structures, parentingregimes, the role of work and childcare. In particular, it investigatesthe impact of being born into poor families or neighbourhoods. Thefindings are presented by country - England, Scotland, Wales andNorthern Ireland.
