1. Police officers can arrest anyone they have reasonable cause to suspect is committing an offence, has committed one or is about to commit one - apart from minor offences. An offence you can be arrested for is known as an "arrestable offence", and they include those for which an adult can be sentenced to at least five years' prison. Other arrestable offences include taking a motor vehicle without the owner's consent and offences under the Public Order Act such as threatening or abusive words or behaviour.
