1. There is widespread ignorance of the reality of stab injuries. A short blade can puncture vital arteries. Knifing someone in the leg is not a bit of a joke. It can kill them. So it is hard to defend the idea that you can just scare someone off using a knife, or give a warning injury.

Knives are not so controllable. Although many young people say they carry them through fear, they are not a defensive weapon.

2. Young people are carrying knives in school, in youth clubs and on the street. Recent studies have suggested that one in 10 boys aged 11 and 12 have carried a knife or other weapon in the previous year, while eight per cent said they had attacked someone intending serious harm.
