1. Joining youth groups and activities is not necessarily an easy choice for young people with autism. People with autism are likely to have problems fully understanding common gestures, tones of voice or facial expressions. They are not good at jokes, and may not get the concept of teasing or banter at all. They may appear aloof and indifferent to other people. Difficulties with imagination often mean that they get stuck in repetitive behaviours and are alarmed by new situations or unplanned changes.
2. Autism is a complex condition and not particularly well understood. It involves some biological or organic impairment in the brain. It is not caused by stress or parental upbringing, and is not an emotional disorder. There is a wide range of conditions - which is why experts often talk of autistic spectrum disorders. Asperger's syndrome is one well-known disorder on the spectrum. Some people with autism have severe learning disabilities. Others learn very quickly and achieve high academic levels.
