1. Young fathers do not get good press. In the highly charged atmosphere of a teenage pregnancy, they may find it hard, if not impossible, to shake off the labels of feckless and useless. There is no denying that some are indeed irresponsible. Some are definitely absent.
However, there are young men who want to take the role seriously, but are battling against prejudicial assumptions from many sides.
2. In 2002, just under 40,000 young women under the age of 18 became pregnant in England. Over 7,000 of those were young women under 16. The rate is one of the highest in Europe, and the Government is very keen to reduce it.
