Resources: Know how - Electronic monitoring

2 mins read
Mobiles for pre-teens are officially frowned upon. One phone targeted at under-eights has been withdrawn by the company that sold it. But parents still look to technology for peace of mind. PJ White explains how marketers are promising to allay fears.

1. Webcams for nurseries seem an obvious use of technologies that have been around so long that they are scarcely high tech anymore. Images from the very familiar CCTV camera can be linked to the internet and viewed on a web site. The idea is that parents with access to an online computer at work can log on, view real-time images of their nursery and reassure themselves that their child is safe and content. The technology is relatively cheap and is fiercely marketed by companies who say it is popular with parents. Primary schools are joining in too.

2. Suppliers respond to fears of inappropriate access saying that passworded systems mean only genuine parents can connect to the secure sites. But common sense says that all systems are crackable, as instances of banking and credit card fraud over the internet have proved. If someone is viewing at work, there is no telling who else is looking over their shoulder - or whose child they are looking at.
