The department's Youth Service Unit is collecting examples of youth work projects in England that are involved in work to ensure a better quality of life for people now and in the future.
Findings will be published in July and will feed into the department's sustainable development plan.
The unit's Colin Smith said: "We hope the findings will show how local authorities can increase the number of young people getting recognised accreditations through youth work."
Other organisations involved in compiling the report include The National Youth Agency, the National Council for Voluntary Youth Services and the Sustainable Development Commission.
The deadline for projects to be included is 31 March. For details, email Jean Hunter at jean. hunter@dfes.gsi.gov.uk.
