SUMMARY

Children's exposure to adversity when growing up has been shown to have a negative impact on their future outcomes, which is why early intervention is increasingly advocated as a way of breaking into a growing cycle of disadvantage.

The study - The Impact of Multiple Risk Factors on Young Children's Cognitive and Behavioural Development - analysed data from 18,818 children born in the year 2000 to 2001. The children were surveyed at age three and age five.

The most common risk factor facing children in the survey was having a parent with depression, something which affected one in five families. The least common was having a parent lacking basic skills (3.6 per cent) or a parent experiencing rage (four per cent).
