Research Report: PICANet: A Decade of Data

Published by Paediatric Intensive Care Auditing Network, University of Leeds and University of Leicester, September 2014

SUMMARY

The Paediatric Intensive Care Auditing Network (PICANet), run jointly by the University of Leeds and the University of Leicester, was established 13 years ago to collect data on paediatric intensive care units. It was the culmination of a review following an outcry over the death in 1985 of a 10-year-old failed by poorly organised services.

The organisation has produced its first report analysing data over the course of a decade. It looked at details of nearly 134,000 admissions to English and Welsh units for children aged up to 15 years from 2004 to 2013. It also analysed admissions of 58,951 under-16s and 1,392 young people aged 16 and over in the UK and Ireland, over the last three years.
