A lack of affordable and accessible childcare places is a major barrier to employment for lone parents on benefits. That's the key finding of an evaluation of a government initiative looking at links between lone parents' attitudes to work and childcare.
The initiative, carried out between 2004 to 2006 in 11 council areas, comprised of two pilots. The first, called the Extended Schools Childcare pilot, aimed to improve the supply of affordable places. The second, called the Childcare Taster pilot, aimed to address lone parents' concerns about childcare through introductory sessions.
An evaluation, which included interviews with 60 lone parents, found the childcare sessions were particularly useful at addressing concerns around the safety of childcare provision.
