Report highlights limits of mentoring

The government should be wary of treating mentoring as "a panacea for disaffected youth", a report from the Centre for Policy Studies has concluded.

The think-tank's report, Youth Mentoring: A Good Thing?, pointed to a gulf between political enthusiasm for mentoring and evidence that it works. It recommended trials to establish which young people will benefit from it.

The report said: "High-quality mentoring can be an effective tool for some specific groups of troubled youth."

However, it stressed that it needed to be more tightly focused, more rigorously controlled and more carefully monitored.
