Remembering The Past: Salford pupils learn about World War Two

Pupils from the Primary Partnership Centre in Eccles, Salford, including (from top to bottom) Luke Donaghain, Jonathan Webster and James Livesy, took shelter in an authentic Anderson Shelter during an event to learn about VE Day and World War Two.

They were part of a group of year five and six pupils who visited the Princes Park Garden Centre in Irlam to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the announcement of victory in Europe last week. The garden centre has recreated the shelter, which was like those used by thousands of families across the UK, to improve children's awareness of the war.

Memorabilia from during the war was also on show. Tom Broad, manager of the garden centre, said the visit "seemed to bring history to life" for the pupils, who also tried on authentic war-time clothing.
